Annual Meeting and Luncheon

featuring Dr. Susan Shirk,

author of "China: Fragile Superpower"

Susan L. Shirk, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State responsible for U.S. relations with China, is Director of the University of California’s Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation, and professor at UC-San Diego’s Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies. A leading authority on China, she has been visiting the country since 1971 and has met with top Chinese officials. Dr. Shirk has written numerous books and articles on this subject, including pieces that have appeared in The Washington Post, Financial Times, and Wall Street Journal.

Professor Shirk received her B.A. in Political Science from Mount Holyoke College, her M.A. in Asian Studies from the University of California, Berkeley and her Ph.D. in Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Prof. Shirk’s publications include her books “How China Opened Its Door: The Political Success of the PRC’s Foreign Trade and Investment Reforms”, “The Political Logic of Economic Reform in China”, and “Competitive Comrades:  Career Incentives and Student Strategies in China”.

In her latest book, “China: Fragile Superpower”, Prof. Shirk examines the constraints on Chinese foreign policy in an era of rapid socio-economic change. Once a sleeping giant, China today is the world’s fastest growing economy. This dramatic turnaround has alarmed many westerners. Prof. Shirk argues that China’s real threat lies in the deep insecurities of its leaders and not in China’s astonishing growth. Chinese leaders today face a troubling paradox: the more developed and prosperous the country becomes the more insecure and threatened they feel. China’s internal politics could be a hazard for the road ahead.
